Locate on Google Maps The World's End is a district of Chelsea, London, lying at the western end of the Kings Road. It took its name from a local pub. It was an unfashionable part of Chelsea and regarded as one of the worst areas in Chelsea. The relative poverty in Worlds End compared to the affluence of much of the rest of Chelsea can still be seen today. World's End and surrounding areas were often bombed during the Blitz. The Fashionistas that had made their home at the other end of the Kings Road discovered the gem that was the World's End and found it was the perfect place to open the boutique Granny Takes a Trip. The World's End then became the centre of the counter-culture world of the 1960s. This continued in the late '70s and '80s with the opening of the boutique SEX started by Vivienne Westwood in the 1970s (which is now know as Worlds end). In the 1960s Chelsea Borough Council began to tackle some of the social issues by erecting new social housing, in particular the Cremorne Estate. This was followed, in the 1980s, by the distinctive red bricked towers of the Worlds End Estate which swept away many of the dilapidated terraces and provided much needed community facilities. The Word's End Estate now houses around 5,000 people of which nearly 20% are teenagers. |
